The Colorful History of Stained Glass Windows: A Window to the Past   by James Greensit

The term “Stained Glass” is used to refer to colored glasses or the designs that are crafted on them. With its rich thousand-year history, the term has been mostly used to identify artistic window fixtures of chapels, churches, and other important buildings. Stained glasses are traditionally made as flat panels but nowadays, artists specializing on making stained glass materials also can make sculptures and three-dimensional structures out of it. Stained glasses are made by adding metallic salts to normal glass for coloring. The finished colored products are then made into stained glass windows by adding small shards of glass that will be arranged to form pictures or patterns. Most of the time, yellow satin and painted details are added to the craft to enhance its design. Using stained glass as a material for art and crafting it as an art require proper artistic skills to execute the designs properly. Engineering skills are also needed in order to assemble a whole piece of frame. Large numbers of stained glass casements were successfully preserved from the late middle Ages in Western Europe that is why this art is considered one of the major forms of art that has survived centuries.

The History of Colored Glass Windows

The manufacture of colored glasses has been popular even during the ancient revolutionary times. The Romans and the Egyptians were the ones who have excelled in creating small colored glass masterpieces. The early Christian Churches, however, were thought to be the people who have widely used the art of stained glass to form art on their buildings. Churches from the 4th and 5th centuries have some of the most popular glass works that can be seen on their ornate and alabaster framed sets. The advent of stained glass reached its pinnacle as a form of art during the middle Ages when it was depicted as a vessel in the Bible. It was during the Early Gothic and Romanesque period when colored glass artworks began to develop into large expanses of glass like the one we see on Canterbury Cathedral and the Chartes Cathedral. The development of Gothic architecture, however, gave way to more ornate designs of the craft. It was during this time when stained glass windows began to be used as large casements to give effect of better illumination to the interior of the buildings.

With the integration of the colored glass to the lofty verticals of these Gothic Cathedrals and other parish churches, the introduction of more artistic designs produced more daring and difficult masterpieces. The popularity of the circular form of colored glass like the rose windows in France began to intensify. Simple casements were transformed into wheel windows with enormously complex designs and traceries were drafted with hundreds of various points like the Bishop’s Eye in Lincoln Cathedral and the casements of Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. At present, different countries have made different innovations on the craft of stained glass windows craft. In America, John la Farge developed the opalescent glass and the copper foil method which is now used as an alternative to the traditional lead bands.
